This workshop is being hosted at the Prescott Public Library on April 24th from 1pm-3pm.
---------------
We will learn about how trees send nutrients back and forth between the roots and the leaves before taking this information and applying it as we learn how to make our own apple tree by grafting part of an apple tree onto new roots to clone the original tree and make delicious apples!
Your students will watch these trees grow for years to come as they hold on to the knowledge of how trees grow and how to graft their own trees to create food security!
We can help you pick the best variety for you and your yard. If you don't have space for a tree, we will grow your tree in our nursery then plant it in a community orchard.
Ages 10 and up (parental discretion for younger kids, sharp tools, and precision work is required for success)
While most of our grafting is done using a sharp knife, we will have specialized tools that will cut a special shape into the wood without the kids handling anything more dangerout than scissors.
If you feel confident having your kids use a sharp knife, they will be available for use at your own risk. Leather gloves are recommended (we will have a few pairs available)
The usual blurb to non-homeschoolers:
Buying fruit trees is expensive, and most nurseries don’t offer what you really need. Take control of your harvest with a grafting workshop that saves you money and gives you the best trees for your home orchard.
What you get:
- A gathering with people who have similar interests
- A skill that will allow you to make you own trees for the rest of your life
- One tree to take home and plant (more can be ordered)
- Instructions for grafting in the future including our preferred supplier for rootstock and scionwood (you'll learn what those are in the class!)
The final tree list will be confirmed once payments are received and we order the materials for this calss, we currently hope to have:
Dexter Jackson (ripens mid August)
William's Pride (Ripens late August)
Prairie Sensation (Ripens mid September)
Freedom (Ripens late September)
Liberty (Ripens early October)
Frostbite (Ripens early October)
Liberty (Ripens Mid October)
Gold Rush (Ripens Late October) *Note: This is very late for our area, we have chosen to experiment with it because it is harvested late and is a great storage apple, it may be that they do not ripen in our area
